A true entrepreneur, Carolyn Sluiter, RCP, CFm, started from scratch in August of 2001, when she established Freeport Home Medical Equipment, Inc. (FMHE), a company that rents, sells, and services durable medical equipment and related supplies.

Carolyn grew up in a Chicago suburb. After graduation from high school, she attended Northern Illinois University for a year. Through connections she made at college, she moved to Freeport where she met her husband. They settled in German Valley and had two children, Ben and Elizabeth, who now are part of the FHME business. She earned her Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) from Rock Valley College. When in school, she gained experience by working at FHN in the Respiratory Department, and continued working there as a staff therapist. Next, she joined what was then Garrity Home Care where she was a marketing executive as well as head of their Respiratory Department. Carolyn opened VCM’s (Venilatory Care Management) Freeport branch and later gained related experience by working at a skilled nursing facility and Integrated Home Care, as well as attending workshops, “soaking up the business whenever I could.”

Today, Freeport Home Medical Equipment has 13 employees in two Freeport locations and a location Belvidere. The company has experienced an astonishing growth pattern in sales of about 20 percent every year.
